Roku 3 Headphone Jack Not Working

My Roku 3 remote headphone jack suddenly stopped working between one session and another after I had unplugged the roku set. I tried unplugging and replugging the headphones. I tried another set of headphones. I tried the volume button on the side. No luck.

Searching online revealed nothing about roku headphone jack problems and neither did a search on the roku site.

So, I did the most basic thing. I removed the batteries and put them back in the remote. It worked. Somehow the remote just needed to be reset.

UPDATE: The batteries were wearing out, so I replaced them too.

You are now a qualified repair technician.

I was going to start a business...Fix your appliance for $30.00 or it's free!

Drive out, check the fuse box. If that didn't work, leave. Too often the problem is that simple.

OG, your business proposal sounds brilliant! Heh.

Also, did you notice the title? Direct, simple wording like one would type into a search engine. That's your tutoring. Thank you!

Good trackdown! Yes, it's often the little things.

You often point out the little things that are super important, Max! I think of your recent posts on Jeremy Hammond and on summer scams.

One wonders why device help faq's don't include simple, general things to try.

Wouldn't that be counterproductive? Why would you buy again when a simple fix lets you keep using what you have? Many people would simply dump the unit and buy a new one.

Really, you're not the customer they want. :-)

Ohhh. Hadn't factored that in. Sigh.

Which is why, I guess, that the real fixes mostly come from private parties with colorful screen names.

My roku 2 headset jack stopped working as well. Replaced batteries, sound worked for about 10 seconds and then stopped working. audio on the TV works fine. The only reason I bought the damn thing was because of the headset feature. UGH!

T. D. said...

Contact, sorry to hear that new batteries didn't fix your roku 2 jack. I sympathize, the headphones are a significant feature for us too. I wish I had even a hint of a fix, but I don't. Sorry.

I had the same problem.i went to tbe menu section on the main page and looked in the sound area and made the selection for stereo. Its audio mode set it to stereo.that should work

Thanks for the hint, Salvador. It's always good to have more options for a fix.

Not sure if my paragraph was published?
I too am having on and off problems with my new Roku 2 headphones. They are
Moody and it's only been a matter of days. I purchased this model for their headphones. 2014 /2720. Wondering if I should return as defective or is there a fix . I would rather not go through the return process if not necessary.
Thank you!

Try another set of headphones. If they work, you know the headphones are the problem. If not, the headphone jack on the remote may be defective. I assume you've tried new batteries or the Roku is new and you have new batteries. Salvador's hint is the only other option I know of. Go to your Roku onscreen settings and under "Audio Mode" and/or "HDMI" switch from the "auto" setting to the "stereo" setting. Mine work fine under the auto setting for both of those. But, that helped him.

echogirl said...

I will try that and thank you very much for your time.

T. D. said...

I hope it worked, echogirl. :-)

Thank you! I think it did! :)

Good to hear that! All best.

Oregon Guy - thank you so much! This totally fixed my remote. So easy but it didn't even occur to me. Thanks again!

Hmmm. My headphone sound stopped as never before. Followed your collective suggestion---reset Sound to Stereo---nothing. Then changed batteries---Sound! Odd that remote always warned me "low" flashing on the screen and I always waite til nothing works, then changed batteries. This time, no warning and sound only stopped. But, hey, I'm back in business and stopped shopping for a new remote! Thanks to all

T. D. said...

Good to hear the new battery fixed it, Gotimbo. All best.

flip@60 said...

I'm with Gotimbo. I stopped shopping for a new Roku handset (because the earphone jack stopped working) when I simply flipped the same batteries L > R / R > L. Didn't need new batteries, just the switch. LOVE the earphone feature (even though it does eat up batteries) and had really missed it when it went down.

Now what can you tell me about a mal-functioning on/off switch on an old, but EXCELLENT Pixma M780 printer? I'd love to have that one back, than this HP...! Thanks for posting this fix it T.D.!

T. D. said...

Flip, thanks for the new tweak of just changing the battery position. Every fix nuance helps.

Sorry, no ideas on the M780 printer.

Thank you, I just moved into a new construction apt with paper thin walls two different upstairs neighbors banged on my door after 11pm to complain about my tv noise. So my daughter bought me a roku 3. Then I decided to buy a second one for my bedroom tv. Put the batteries in and nothing. I called Amazon and they're sending me another one. I started watching tv on the first roku 3 and after a couple of hours the headphones quit. That's when t went online and read this blog. Sure enough changing the setting to stereo worked. But the batteries quit after two days. I really need headphones so I guess I'll go to Costco and stock up on batteries.

T. D. said...

Glad you found a fix, Gail. You might want to get rechargeable batteries. Costco carries Panasonic eneloop batteries with charger in their warehouses. I have been happy with them.

Unknown said...

Thanks, how long does a charge last?

T. D. said...

I'm not sure, Gail. I use regular batteries in our Roku remote, but we don't use it that often except during baseball season. I use the eneloops for photos/video recording. A set usually lasts for taking an hour of video. But, I know that's comparing apples to oranges for you.

Ha ha ha! Thanks! I did what u did, in that order! Only I DID find help online. ..your post. . How funny it is almost always as simple as this. Thank u

Angel, great that these hints helped you. Thanks for commenting.

Thanks, we just tried these fixes and our headphones work again. Lets my daughter watch tv, my son play on the iphone, and me work on my computer all in the same room.

T. D. said...

Glad they worked for you, Tracy.

After trying different batteries and earbuds and using different audio options nothing worked. Finally I ran a Ethernet cable to the Roku player and the static completely vanished except for a few occasional clicks. The WiFi receiver didn't work for me causing videos to load slowly or hang and caused the static.Doesn't work with WiFi if your TV is another floor or too far away from the router.

T. D. said...

Thanks for the additional fix option, itstherightone.

We were having the same problem with the headphones. Re-paired the remote, then went to the sound settings, changed it from "auto" to "stereo" and that worked. Headphones working now.

T. D. said...

Glad the stereo mode worked for you. Thanks for letting us know.

KyKernel said...

Thanks. I couldn't find this on the Roku site.

T. D. said...

KyKernel, interesting how common this problem is. Roku should be addressing it. But, MaxRedline above points out probably why Roku doesn't. Most people will just buy a new unit. More sales. :-/

This is close to my fix - when switching to headphones I reset the wireless connection (to same network) and the crackling that was ruining my life went away. Guessing that the streaming audio is slightly different when it has to route via Bluetooth to the remote vs hdmi output. I had switched remotes/batteries/headphones and nothing else worked.

T. D. said...

whsmacon, thanks for taking the time to write the hint. The more work arounds we have, the better.

Unknown said...

Taking out and putting the batteries back in worked for me as well, thanks !!

T. D. said...

Glad the battery fix worked for you.

Scott said...

this happens regularly with my roku. even when the batteries are new. something is just screwed up with the software in the remote.

I won't buy another Roku. This combined with the lousy interface most of the apps have makes it a mediocre streaming box. I prefer my Apple TV.

going to soon get wireless headphones for my tv and get rid of the Roku.

flip@60 said...

Yes, this is a good fix-it. I haven't had to do it in a long while now...

In response to Scott: I've enjoyed the Roku 3 (don't have anything else to compare it to). I spend most of my TB-watching time is with ear buds, and, a big downfall with the Roku 3 (or any Roku w/ earphone jack) is that I go through AAA batteries too much. Our next TV will definitely have ear phone jack so it saves on batteries, but this Samsung plasma isn't showing any signs of failure, and for the bedroom it'll be with us for a LONG while. But the Roku has done us well.

T. D. said...

Scott, is does take more than it should to get the Roku 3 to work right. And flip you are right it goes through batteries. But, for us too Roku works best right now.

I'm having same issue with headphones . Sounds work fine on regular tv with the jack plugged into the receiver ......when I plug the jack into the Roku tv I get low volume at best....although this worked fine for 5 months. Tried the batteries. ...changed the settings. ....bought new headphones. ...nothing worked now at a loss.

T. D. said...

Arlene, sorry nothing has helped. Maybe there's a fix out there or maybe you got a lemon. :-/

Unknown said...

Omg it works ... Take at least one battery out and put it in... Remote will pair again and nano!

Unknown said...

Arlene there is a volume control on the side of the Roku device, try using that part for volume

T. D. said...

Christine, thanks for your hint to Arlene. Glad it worked for you!

Unknown said...

xD it actually worked xD

T. D. said...

Glad it did, 94 Da Wartortle. Amazing how something simple will do the trick.

rhytonen said...

None of that worked.
When I wiggle the plug and it goes in and out,
so it's obviously the jack's solder joint on the board.
It cracks easily from heavy use.. this is NOT a software problem!
