Crazy Voter Morals

Clintons at Trump wedding
It's okay for a former businessman to lie, change his political position on a whim, say offensive things about people because . . . he's new to politics.

As though a businessman naturally has lower moral and civil standards than professional politicians who scrape the barrel on both.

One would have thought normal people, including businessmen, had higher standards than politicians. But no, apparently they have lower standards and are to be given a pass for having lower standards.

It's okay for a total political being to lie, change her political position on a whim, say offensive things about people because . . . she isn't the former businessman who donated big bucks to her political campaigns and charitable foundation.

Giuliani, Trump, Clinton
As though backing people and being "friends" with them is something you turn on and off from one day to the next depending on what your goal is any given day.

No wonder the country is in such a mess if average people treat their friends (and customers) like that and teach their kids to do the same. Though, to be truthful, the business people I do business with are far better people than the presidential candidates of the two major parties.

Amazing, isn't it? Sad that America can't seem to do better than this.

Nice Trump wedding photo, by the way.

You and I are on the same page on this, Max.

They all get along so well socially which is fine given that with all their faults they aren't Caligula. But, unfortunately, they get along well politically too. Back rubbing and funding each other are highly refined skills in their set.

They exemplify what our founders didn't expect - career politicians. They assumed that, like themselves, citizens would serve for a short period of time and then go back to work.

Yes, George Washington set the standard for that, didn't he? Two terms. And they specifically set senators' terms at 6 years so they could get the experience in their first term they needed to be effective. Only court justices were expected to serve for life because those who judge have to be professionals at knowing the law and applying it.

But, legislators needed to have intimate contact with their constituents and their needs that only living with them as regular citizens would give. And, Washington didn't want a long term president who would become in effect a monarch. Interesting that only in the 20th century did that have to be codified.

Yes, Washington exemplified the concept of limited, rather than career, government. How unfortunate that we've gone so far from that ideal.

A big part of his greatness was his very character. Who he was made what he did that much more important because those who came after him knew what he did was right as well as successful. Unlike the two now running.
