Yep - I've been friends for some three decades with a guy who owns land on Deer Island here, as well as on an island across from Petersburg, Alaska. He has a portable sawmill in each location, and he cut and milled the lumber for his home and barns on Deer Island - all of which he built. He did the same in Alaska, where he now resides. He also replanted trees.

In Alaska, he lives with his wife and dog off-grid. He designed his roof to capture rain and snow-melt, which is funneled into a large tank under the house - that's used for bathing and other stuff. Having had the water tested in a nearby stream, he hauls that in and runs it through a filter for consumption, dish washing, and whatnot.

Amazing guy.

I too admire people who get basic things done either using great modern mechanical tools like this or basic tools like hammers, saws and axes. Your friend is smart and talented and an obvious survivor. Thanks for commenting, Max.

You have great stuff here, TD, which is why I check your site very frequently. It's an oasis amid the general internet clamor.
